IN THE NAVY...NAVY BLUE THAT IS!!!

Lately, I am so in love with the color navy blue. I've been searching for the perfect navy blue bag to no avail. I almost bought a pair of navy blue loafers from Zara for $29.99, but they were a shiny patent leather.  What I did find is this stretchy polyester floral fabric from Unique for $3.99. Initially, I was thinking wrap dress, but I'm not there yet. So I decided to make a body hugging skirt.

I used/traced one of my pencil skirts as the pattern and sewed up the seams.

The waist was a little flimsy, but didn't require elastic, so I used

 about 4 inches of this stretchy navy blue material as the waistband.

I made it wide enough to fold down.

My photographer (dbass) went home sick.

So I was on my own.

I forgot to smile.

That's better.

BLACK PLEATS

During my many visits to Unique, I picked up some black satin fabric,

 and knew immediately, I wanted to make a skirt.  I wanted something fancy though, 

so I thought why not pleats? Wait, I don't know how to make pleats.

You Tube here I come.

Shout out to MadebySimstatic for the tutorial on making pleats: 

 Place a pin four inches to the right, another pin 2 inches and a third pin another 2 inches.

 

 Fold the third pin back behind to the first pin and pin that together. 

After the fold, repeat the steps, place a pin 2 inches to the right and another

 pin 2 inches, but this time, fold the 2nd pin to the front and pin that together. 

After tedious pinning, I sewed across the top hem.

I didn't have enough fabric, so I made a flat front.

Sewed the seams, added a zipper on the side and hemmed it.

YELLOW PARADISE

The definition of paradise is an ideal place or state.  That's exactly what I thought when I spotted this fabric at Unique. Hibiscus, parrots, and palms. The only thing missing is a cold refreshing fruity drink.

"I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR..."

How many times have you said that? Well, if you don't have anything to wear, you can always sew something. Yesterday, I said to myself, "I need a blue skirt". So instead of going shopping, I foraged through my fabric bin and proceeded to make the following. Which by the way, took less than 2 hours to make.

I wanted to make a skater skirt with no seam, but when I repeated the skater skirt

 process, and folded it twice, there wasn't enough fabric width wise. So, I only folded 

the  material in half this time. To make the waistline, I measured down 10 1/2 inches

 and then 20 inches from that mark to make the hemline. 

Cut the hem and waistline.

As it turned out, the waistline was too big. Why? Because I forgot 

this fabric had a stretch to it. So, I pinned the two sides together,

 measured about an inch and cut off the excess. Sewed the seams together.

Measured and cut 4 inches for the waistband. 

 Folded in half.

HOUNDSTOOTH

Being an amateur seamstress, I rely heavily on sewing tutorials on YouTube. I wanted to make a skater skirt, so I followed the instructions of smarmyclothes. I picked up this houndstooth fabric from Unique for $3.99 for 2 yards.

I skipped a couple of her steps, but I did fold the material twice with the folded edges at the top and on the left.

I took a piece of twine and chalk and used it like a protractor to make my rounded hem.

I held the fabric up to my waist to see how long it fell and then cut on a curve for the waistline. I will save that cut piece as a guide for future skirts.





This is what the skirt looks like when you open it. There are no seams. It is one continuous circle.

I measured my waist and cut another piece of fabric for the waistband.

I pinned the waistband around the open circle of the skirt and sewed it together.

I decided later to add a zipper. Zippers are a little trickier. I will do a tutorial in another post.

Here's the finished product.

I decided to make a matching shirt. Doesn't it look like dress? I could attach the top to the bottom, but I want to have the option of wearing the skirt with something else.
